A Disconnected Military: Can the Pentagon and the Military Attract Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs?

Forget fatigues and combat boots, the U.S. military wants new recruits equipped with something different: tech skills. And an Internet pioneer has advice that could help ease the Pentagon’s technology disconnect.

While working with the Department of Defense in the 1970s, Vint Cerf says he had to convince “some of the smartest people” in academia to set aside their Cold War–era distrust of the government and help build the military’s high-speed information-sharing technology. Ideological tensions regarding the Vietnam War and the ethical implications of designing technology for the military posed hurdles to developing what is now the global Internet, as did skeptical lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
